The adidas Y-3 line is probably their single collection that is furthest out of the eye of the “sneakerhead” crowd. That sort of changed with the arrival of the adidas Y-3 Qasa, a sleek silhouette that nails the whole urban-ninja vibe. Shown here is the next iteration of the shoes: the adidas Y-3 Qasa Racer. This time the pliable sneaker gets outfitted with a sort of roll-cage on its upper for just a bit more support. Continue reading to get a glimpse of the first couple colorways and keep in mind these won’t be in stores till Spring/Summer 2014.Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto is adidas’ longest running collaborator. His Y-3 capsule has been going for over eleven years now and it’s responsible for some of the more innovative lifestyle designs on the market over that time. Now Y-3 welcomes its own guest designer, as the graphic artist Peter Saville comes on board to create the prints and typography used for the hilariously named adidas Y-3 ‘Meaningless Excitement’ collection. This spring/summer 2014 set includes the range of standouts we’ve come to expect from Yamamoto, but these rival even Jeremy Scott’s craziest work thanks to a couple of sandals set on some seriously substantial wedges. Unlike with recent Y-3 collections, it seems like with this set of shoes, Mr.Yohji Yamamoto’s Nomad Star midtop made a polarizing splash when we recently previewed its unique shroud, but what kind of response can we predict from this more traditional lowtop version? Right off the bat, the shelltoed lowcut look should be more familiar on this new adidas Y-3 Nomad Star Low, though it’s far more likely to be connected to the iconic Superstar than any of the forgettable Pro Model performance lowtops that released over the past few years. And while these won’t break necks in quite the same way as the bagged-up midtop, smartly placed lines ensure these subdued colorways will indeed turn heads. It’s hard to argue he’s anywhere but the peak of his powers when you see this newest adidas Y-3 design, one of many Yamamoto designs featuring nontraditional lacing. But we’ve never seen the laces and basically the entire upper of a shoe covered in a shroud like the new Y-3 Nomad Star, a mix of velvety suede and grainy leather that transforms the classic Pro Model midtop silhouette beyond recognition. This collection consists of a black denim Y-3 Honja High, a black Y-3 Kazuhiri, and an all red Y-3 Honja Low, just to name a few of the models. There’s no doubt that Ye would be inspired by Yohji’s prolific output, which sees the popular adidas Y-3 Qasa minimalist design made a little less so by way of external support structures. Black and white colorways in both low and hightop forms are joined by a new model whose we’ll probably learn in the not too distant future.Say what you want about the adidas Y-3 line, but you can’t argue that they aren’t pushing the conventions when it comes to sneaker construction. Never afraid to think outside of the box, or anywhere even remotely close to the box, Yohji Yamamoto has been cranking out hits for over a decade now.
